Filipa Lima

Biography

I began my academic journey in classical music as a professional flutist, having studied and worked in Portugal and Germany. Although I have followed a path that I consider quite specialized, I have diverse interests in other areas that, either directly or indirectly, intersect with classical music.

After completing several certified courses by the Ministry of Education, I decided to pursue another Master’s degree in Aesthetics and Artistic Studies with an internship at the National Arts Plan. I also obtained a Post-Graduate degree in Intangible Cultural Heritage, and currently, I am enrolled in a Master’s program in Political Science and International Relations, always with a focus on Culture.

Simultaneously, I serve as the President of a non-profit Association – Musicis Pontem Orquestra do Alto Minho – which organizes classical music programming in the Alto Minho region, my hometown. I have a great affinity for scientific research and have conducted various studies within the scope of academic seminars, using my own association to test and validate hypotheses regarding the relationship between classical music and its audiences.

Doctoral Project

Title “Portuguese Regional Orchestras: The Correlation Between Public Cultural Policies and Classical Music Audiences”

Abstract The Portuguese Regional Orchestras stem from a stance regarding public cultural policies – the democratization of culture. Within this framework are the Orquestra do Norte (1992), the Orquestra das Beiras (1997), and the Orquestra Clássica do Sul (2002). Thirty years later, I aim to create in-depth literature on the Portuguese Regional Orchestras to generate scientific knowledge; to understand the role of Regional Orchestras in cultivating audiences for classical music, thereby assessing the impact of current public cultural policies; and to analyze the chosen stance – the democratization of culture – in order to ascertain if there might be another position more suitable for contemporary needs. I intend to conduct an exploratory, descriptive, explanatory, and interpretive investigation, employing an ethnographic approach with a qualitative strategy. As methodological instruments, I will rely on documentary analysis of primary and secondary sources, interview surveys, discourse analysis, and content analysis.
