The role of art as a tool for social development and for personal emancipation in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities is an essential line of research nowadays. I propose to focus on actions related to arts made towards/with two kinds of social actors, both very present in Europe’s recent history and debates: migrants and refugees. The general starting question is: How can artistic creation and expression be a tool of personal and collective inclusion for migrants and refugees in today’s Europe? Using qualitative research tools, the first broad objective is to gain insight on the possible advantages of art forms (e.g. music, dance, theatre, cinema, photography, street-art) as tools for education, specifically in multicultural communities resulting from migration movements in and into Europe. The second broad objective is to deepen the knowledge we have on social interactions between all involved ‘actors’ who share educational spaces in those critical migrant/refugee contexts. It is a daring research project, to be made in several European countries, having Lisbon as its main base.
