About this Group

This Research Group results from the merger of the previous groups Creation, Theory, and Technologies of Music and Performance Studies and Performance as Artistic Research. Its aim is to consolidate and expand the field of artistic research, creating opportunities to combine the knowledge of artists and researchers, benefiting both. In dealing with artistic creation, the Group emphasizes the relationship between reflective aspects, remix practices, and aesthetic appreciation.

Objectives

  • Consolidate Artistic Research by developing Performance and Musical Creation as Research in the fields of classical music, jazz, and popular music;
  • Develop performance optimization projects related to psychological and physiological issues, as well as instrumental teaching strategies;
  • Create new music: instrumental, orchestral, opera, electroacoustic, algorithmic, live and interactive computer music, mixed media and video, and interactive detection;
  • Conduct research on performance studies from historical, analytical, or sociological perspectives;
  • Investigate intermodal performance based on music and dance

Priorities

  • Develop collaborative projects between composers and performers on Artistic Research;
  • Study, create, perform, record, and promote Portuguese music from all historical periods;
  • Experiment with and explore contemporary issues such as technology, critical theory, plastic creativity, poly-stylism, and interdisciplinarity;
  • Develop projects exploring expressiveness, music and technologies, electroacoustic music, and music and image;
  • Promote the creation of innovative music, including electronic media, driven by a diverse range of aesthetics and techniques, utilizing the resources of the Electroacoustic Music Research Center (CIME).
  • Promote meetings and conferences on Artistic Research, such as “Performa – International Conference on Performance Studies,” ‘Hands On’ Research, and “EAW – Electroacoustic Winds“; along with the development of the IMPAR platform and its journal ÍMPAR – an online journal of Artistic Research.
