Biography

 

Enio de Souza is a PhD candidate in Ethnomusicology (INET-md/NOVA University Lisbon), and master’s degree in Asian Studies at The Catholic University of Portugal. Research interests focus on cultural policies, Chinese music and musical instruments, and festivals, topics related to his PhD thesis. He was the organizer and coordinator of the education department of the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre Museum (CCCM) in Lisbon (1999–2019). He held various positions at the Macau Cultural Institute (ICM) in the 1980s and 1990s, including head of the Performing Arts Department. Furthermore, he has participated in several national and international academic meetings, seasonal courses, conferences, and workshops on Chinese music and musical instruments, in the field of ethnomusicology, and historical musicology. His publications include articles in academic journals and book chapters on Chinese music and musical instruments, and his master's dissertation – "Chinese Musical Instruments / Collection of the Macau Scientific and Cultural Centre (Museum) in Lisbon" – was published by the International Institute of Macao in Lisbon in April 2018. Since 2016, he has been the organizer of the Lisbon Conference: Chinese Music and Musical Instruments, already in its seventh edition. In 2018 and 2023 respectively, he organized the 21st and 24th International CHIME conference, held in Lisbon and Mafra. He is the curator of the exhibition Chinese Musical Instruments, which opened to the public at the National Palace of Mafra (Portugal) in July 2022. He is affiliated to The International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance, and to The CHIME – European Foundation for Chinese Music Research, as a member of the CHIME Coordinating Committee (CCC).
