Graduated in musicology by the New University of Lisbon and PhD in Music (Ethnomusicology) by the University of Aveiro. Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication and Art of Aveiro University. Carried ethnomusicological research since 1992, in mainland Portugal, Madeira, Cape Verde and Brasil. Cape verdian music, migration, poscolonial studies, music and education, music within lusophone communities, music as cultural intangible heritage are some of his scientific interests. Has presented academic conferences and published essays and scientific recordings in Portugal, Spain, France, United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Brasil, South Africa and Mozambique. Besides his academic activity of teaching and researching is also involved in public activities of music dissemination and education.
