Leonor Losa is a researcher in ethnomusicology at INET-MD. Her work focuses particularly on change in the field of popular music and its articulations with social, political, economic and institutional dimensions. She has developed reflection around the political, esthetical and discursive dimensions underlying the production of popular music in the country.

Her PhD dissertation “Ser fadista é maior que ser cantor”: Intersubjectividade, voz e o ethos da memória is a ethomusicological ethnography around the fado singer Ricardo Ribeiro proposing a biographic ethnography approach. From a look focused on the individual the dissertation approaches: fado during the democratic trajectory; the intersubjective foundations of creativity; the ways the past is claimed and produced through music; the different musical geographies of expressivity and its relation with the production of historicity expressed in composition and interpretation of fado. Trying to understand the subject in its ontological and localized dimension the dissertation deals with intersubjective foundation of the subject, particularly the relational and dialectical processes of subjective formation: the relation with others; the relation with larger structures; or the relation with cultural difference, proposing the actualization of the paradigm of cosmopolitanism towards what sustained as cross-cultural empathy.
Between 2009 and 2012, she was one of the researchers of the project "The Recorded Industry in Portugal in the XX Century", in which she developed a historically framed study of the introduction of recorded sound technologies and the implementation of the phonogram market in the country in the early XX century. The awarded article "The Introduction of phonogram market in Portugal: Lindström labels and local traders (1879-1925)" (co-authored with Susana Belchior) and the book "Machinas fallantes": A música gravada em Portugal nas primeiras décadas do século XX (2013, Tinta da China) are some of her published results within this research project.
In 2009 she finished the MA dissertation "Nós Humanizámos a Indústria": Reconfiguração da produção fonográfica e musical em Portugal nos anos 60, centered on the emergence of new oppositional social values within the production of Portuguese popular music during the pre-revolutionary period, and the role of the record publisher Arnaldo Trindade. Aiming to continue the research around the role of Arnaldo Trindade, the Orfeu record label, and of the recorded musicians, Leonor contributed to create the Orfeu Project which is running at INET and at ESAD-Idea until 2020.
Leonor was a member of the editorial team of the Enciclopédia da música em Portugal no séc. XX (coord. Salwa Castelo-Branco). In the Encyclopedia she published several texts, mainly on institutions, agents and processes related to the recording production in Portugal, and is also the author of the work's thematic and names indexes.
Currently Leonor collaborates as a researcher in the project "Musique et Politiques Mémorielles: Émergences, Histoire, Appropriations" developed by the Centre de Recherche en Ethnomusicologie, of the CNRS, France.
Since 2015 she is also member of the board of SPIM- Sociedade Portuguesa de Investigação em Música.
