Biography
Gilvano is an invited Assistant Professor at Universidade de Aveiro. He holds a European PhD in Music/Performance studies (honour and distinction) from Universidade de Aveiro (Erasmus period at University College of London/Institute of Education). He completed a BMus (classical guitar) at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria and an MMus (music performance) at Universidade de Aveiro. He had experience researching on musical analysis, music performance and contemporary music for guitar. Currently, his research focuses on performers’ career development. Gilvano is investigating educational models to support career development of performers in higher education music institutions. His experience as researcher includes the domain of collaborative methodologies, development of pedagogical modes for artistic research in higher music education, the domain of qualitative methods of data collection and analysis and finally the use of digital strategies to disseminate the knowledge produced in arts and humanities. He has been invited to give lectures on several topics regarding music and research in Portuguese universities. The results of his research have been presented in conferences and seminaries in Portugal, Brazil, United Kingdom, Spain, Austria and Japan. In 2014 Gilvano created the Artistic Mentoring Program (AMPMP), a complementary approach to teaching music performance in higher education based on the integration of career management and artistic development. Parallel to his activity as researcher and mentor, Gilvano has also pursued an active career as performer (multi-instrumentalist) and songwriter through his group Atma Kirtana. In this artistic research project he has explored the fusion between music practices from north India, western art music and folk music.
