Biography

Aoife Hiney concluded a PhD in Music in 2017 and a Masters in Music (Performance – Choral Conducting) at the University of Aveiro. She also holds an honours degree in Music Education from Trinity College, Dublin.
Aoife studied choral conducting with António Vassalo Lourenço (PT), Bernie Sherlock (IE), David Brophy (IE), Ite O’Donovan (IE), Lilla Gabor (HU) Marco António da Silva Ramos (BR), Neil Ferris (UK) and Vasco Negreiros (PT).
She was the assistant conductor of the multi-international award winning chamber choir, New Dublin Voices. She founded the chamber choir Voz Nua in Aveiro in 2012 and in 2015 the cultural non-profit association Voz Nua. She conducts the four choirs that form this association. She has also directed Coro Slava (Universidade Nova de Lisboa), the Coro de Academia de Saberes (Aveiro) and worked with the male voice choir Graduale as a guest conductor.
She was an elected member of the Kodály Society of Ireland and is currently involved in the Centro Kodály Portugal, an initiative of the Associação Portuguesa de Educação Musical. Her teaching experience ranges from primary school to university level.
Aoife is the artistic director of FICA (Festival Internacional de Coros, Aveiro) and associate director of the ZêzereArts Festival.
The co-coordinator of LABEAMUS - Laboratório de Ensino e Aprendizagem de Músicas da Universidade de Aveiro -, she is a member of the editorial team of ÍMPAR – Online Journal for Artistic Research, and a member of the research team for the SOMA project (Sons e Memorias de Aveiro), which is financed by the FCT.
Aoife has presented her research at various national and international conferences. Her research interests focus on non-professional choral singing practices, teacher training, shared research practices and the development of musical literacy and music education for adults.
She is currently a post-doctorate researcher at the University of Aveiro and an integrated researcher of INET-md.
