Biography
PhD in Ethnomusicology from New University of Lisbon, Master in Ethnomusicology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences (focus in Anthropology) from PUC-Rio. Her investigations centre on the study of expressive practices in the city. She has research experience in debates on migration, religious practices, race relations/ethnicity, sexuality and online methodology related to musical practices. Her PhD thesis, advised by Prof Dr Salwa Castelo Branco, focused on the centrality of music in the spiritual practices of the Hare Krishna Movement in Lisbon. Her study highlight the different migratory paths of Hare Krishna devotees and the space of the temple as a place of sociability, support, and adaptation to the host society. And I analyze the ways in which the spiritual practices of the Hare Krishna carried out by a majority of migrants from countries such as Brazil, Russia, Mozambique, India, and Nepal, among others, are used as a tool to create new social groups, to revive memories of their society of origin and to occupy public space in the city. I also point out how through music, the devotees seek to associate the movement's image to a cultural practice, in an attempt to integrate the "diversity" of cultural activities in an increasingly turistified Lisbon. She also wrote an ethnography of the electronic music scene in Rio de Janeiro (masters dissertation), advised by Prof Dr Samuel Araújo; and and ethnography of the Hip Hop scene at Lapa neighborhood, Rio de Janeiro (B.S. monography), advised by Dr Santuza Cambraia Naves e Dr Laura Moutinho. As a researcher, she worked at the Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History in Brazil; at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (CPDOC / FGV-RJ); and at the Latin American Center for Sexuality and Human Rights, part of the Institute of Social Medicine at the State University From Rio de Janeiro (CLAM / IMS / UERJ).
