Abstract
This project focuses on the politics and aesthetics of various popular music styles, and the influence of cultural policy, music technologies and the media, especially the recording industry. The project also explores the relationship between popular music and its urban environment. Focusing on the city of Lisbon, an attempt is made to understand how popular musics shape urban space, contributing to integrating migrant populations in the city and to creating new socialites. Focusing on musical domains such as fado, pop-rock, dance music and música popular portuguesa, research is being carried out on music in an historic neighborhood (Bairro Alto) and among migrants from rural areas. Attention is also given to music production systems, music journalism, technologies, composers, performers, writers and musical styles.
