Colloquium | Caetano Veloso and the Asa da Palavra: censorship, exile and song

After a brief introduction to the subject of art censorship in Brazil, notably during the Military Dictatorship, but also in the Vargas (Estado Novo) period and in the current troubled period, we will discuss Caetano Veloso's production and his clashes with Censorship and repression. democratic freedoms, notably after AI-5, which culminated in his arrest and exile in London. It will also be our object of discussion her musical production in exile, focusing on her performance of the song "Asa Branca", by Luiz Gonzaga and Humberto Teixeira, and in the place of listening she established, articulating musical time and historical time. The speech will be interspersed with live and recorded musical examples.

Pedro Paulo Salles is a researcher at the Department of Music of the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA USP), Brazil, working mainly in the field of ethnomusicology, investigating indigenous music in Brazil. He is a researcher of the Research Groups PAM - Research in Musical Anthropology (USP Anthropology) and PAMVILLA - Analytical Perspectives for the Music of Villa-Lobos (Music USP), being one of the authors of the book Villa-Lobos, and the text A Canção Tropicalista: música popular de invenção.
