Biography

Samuel Araujo is an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at  the School of Music of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), being also a Collaborating Professor at the Graduate Program of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO). Betwee March and June, 2014, he was also a Tinker Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago. Since 2003 he has been coordinating  ethnographic projects in music carried out by research groups integrated by residents of the researched social spaces, a work which has resulted in several publications and oral presentations in academic and extra-academic forums in Brazil and abroad. Hislast publications have been “Sound praxis, poverty and social participation; perspectives from a collaborative study in Rio de Janeiro” (Yearbook for Traditional Music, v. 1, p. 28-42, 2013), em coautoria com Vincenzo Cambria,  “Entre muros, grades e blindados; trabalho acústico e práxis sonora na sociedade pós-industrial”. (El Oído Pensante, v. 1, p. 1-15, 2013) e “Dimensiones politicas del dialogo intercultural: patrimonios de conocimiento y luchas sociales”. (In: Margarita Chaves, Mauricio Montenegro e Marta Zambrano, orgs., El valor del patrimonio: mercado, politicas culturales y agenciamientos sociales. 1ed.Bogotá: ICAHN, 2014, v. 1, p. 359-386). Since 2011, he has been an Executive Board member of the  International Council for Traditional Music.
